Although conventional medicine does not have a term for male menopause, ancient texts documented menopausal symptoms due to general decline and imbalance of the “kidney system”.  Clinically, formulas are prescribed according to basic TCM theories, differential diagnosis and individual’s constitution.

1. “Kidney Yin Insufficiency” and “ Heart and Kidney System Desynchronization”

Signs and Symptoms: dizziness, headaches, intermittent tinnitus, palpitation, irritability, insomnia, excessive dreaming, decreased memory performance, hot flashes, intermittent sweating, and premature ejaculations.

2. “Liver Yan Hyperactivity” and “Kidney Yin Insufficiency”

Signs and Symptoms: irritability, tinnitus, polydipsia, numbness and tingling of the extremities, belching, reflux, constipation, oliguria, dark yellow urination, and lack of libido.

3. “Spleen and Kidney Yang Insufficiency” and “Phlegm Stagnation”

Signs and symptoms: irritability, palpitation, cold limbs, cold intolerance, decreased memory performance, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea, and premature ejaculations.

4. “Kidney General Insufficiency and Malnourishment”

Signs and Symptoms: back pain, nervousness, alopecia, vertigo, tinnitus, heaviness in head, urinary frequency and urgency, urinary retention, and impotence.

Treatment typically focuses on nourishing the “kidney system”, and utilizing herbs, such as Yerba Epimedii, Rhizoma Curculiginis, Morinda Root, prepared Chinese Foxglove Root and Wolfberries.  Commonly used prescriptions are LiuWei DiHuang Wan, QiJu DiHuang Wan, GuiLu ErXian Jiao, ZuiGuiWan or YouGui Wan, etc.

Menopause is an unavoidable process that calls for the support and understanding from family.  Individual should adjust his lifestyle accordingly, exercise regularly, eat a balance diet, and maintain a healthy weight. Tobacco and alcohol should be avoided.  One should also develop some stress management strategies. Although the advice seems cliché, this is still the best way to minimize menopausal discomfort, and maintain optimal health.
