Dementia itself is not a disease but rather a collection of symptoms caused by diseases that impairs the performance of the brain.  The risk of having Dementia increases with age but it is definitely not a normal part of aging.  Dementia can lead to serious health problems.  Therefore it is important to identify signs of Dementia and get diagnosed early.

Some of the early warning signs of Dementia are:

Recent memory loss such as repeatedly asking the same questions, relying more and more on memory aides.

Difficulty in performing familiar tasks such as cooking or managing a budget at work.

Communication problems such as finding simple words to use or understand other people.

Problem-solving difficulties such as not being able to do simple calculation or keeping track of money.

Often misplacing things and not able to retrace their steps.

Feeling confused about the time and place.  Forgetting about the day of the week or unable to find the way to a familiar place.

Poor or decreased judgement.  The person may have difficulty making appropriate decisions such as judging distance and direction when driving, or what to wear during cold weather.

Change in personality or behaviour, becoming more moody, afraid, suspicious and confused.

Loss of initiative to start something or go somewhere.

If your loved one is showing symptoms of Dementia, he or she should be brought to a medical practitioner for examination.  The earlier the diagnosis, the more time there is available to plan for the future as well as to control the development of the diseases.
