Dental Emergency –
Toothache
Article contributed by:

Toothaches can arise due
to a myriad of reasons,
the most common being
extensive dental decay
affecting the nerve
within the tooth.
We all know how these
aches tend to occur on
Saturday evenings, when
dental clinics are
already closed for the
weekend, leaving you
miserable and with
little options left for
seeking help. Instead of
letting the toothache
ruin your mood and your
well-deserved break
during the weekend,
there are actually steps
that you can take to
help ease the pain.
One very simple way is
to avoid exacerbating
factors, such as chewing
on hard sticky food or
taking hot or cold
drinks.
Over the counter
painkillers are quite
effective in controlling
mild to moderate
toothaches and are
usually sufficient for
most to tide them over a
couple of days before
their appointment with
the dentist.
Painkillers such as
aspirin should however
not be placed directly
over the painful tooth
(or area) as they can
result in chemical burns
of the gums and cheek.
If taking painkillers is
not a suitable option
due to previous allergic
reactions in some
individuals, topical
application of oil of
cloves has been proven
to be fairly helpful in
managing mild
toothaches. The
antiseptic and
anti-inflammatory
properties of clove oil
can help relieve
toothaches although
reapplication every few
hours is needed.
