Room Safety Measures

Carpets make the floor less slippery for someone who is unsteady.

Inspect carpets for ragged edges and tack them down.

Eliminate all tripping hazards, such as rugs on the floor, which might be tripped over in the passage ways.

Secure wires from electrical appliances to walls or moldings.

Arranged furniture in such a way that does not hinder movement.

Mark the edges of steps by adding a strip along the edge of each step in a contrasting color to make it easier to see.

Nightlights or dimmer is useful to control lightings at night.  Keep a flashlight next to the bed.

A sliding door or door opening outwards in the bathroom or toilet will give more space for caregivers to work with the person who need assistances.

Allocate a place in the bathroom or toilet to put toiletries so that they are within easy reach.

Place towel racks close to sink to prevent water from dripping on the floor.

It is safer for the person to be seated whilst showering if he is less mobile, and to prevent him from becoming exhausted.

Install emergency call button in the bathroom or toilet, if necessary.

Handrails, grab bars and other safety devices may be installed in the bathroom or toilet to provide stability and support with standing and sitting.

Ensure that all safety devices installed are maintained in good condition and securely attached.

Non-slip mats should be placed in the bathroom to prevent fall.
