Be it standing, seated or lying down, if your heart is experiencing skipping beats, beating too fast or harder than usual, you are having heart palpitation.  This condition is commonly caused by:

Hyperthyroidism

Other heart conditions, such as an arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm), heart defect or previous heart attack

TCM’s Perspective

TCM believes that heart palpitation is caused by one or more of the physiological mechanisms:

1.

Deficiency in qi, blood, yin or yang leads to insufficient nourishment to the heart; or/and

2.

Stagnation of internally developed rheum, phlegm, heat or blood coagulates the heart’s blood vessels.

Adjust Your Lifestyle

Some ways to avoid triggers include:

Reduce stress or anxiety though practising relaxation techniques, e.g. yoga, deep breathing or aromatherapy.

Avoid stimulants which trigger palpitations.

Eat healthy. Refrain from consuming food with high salt or saturated fat content, spicy, raw or cold food.
